Description
Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of learning, knowledge, music and art. She is considered to be the daughter of Goddess Durga and the consort of
Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. In idols and pictorial representations she is mainly depicted with a white tinge, as the color white signifies purity. Here purity refers to the purity of true knowledge and learning, in addition to the discrimination between right and wrong.
Most Hindu gods and goddesses are associated with a vehicle or carrier in the form of a chosen animal. A white swan is Saraswati's vehicle. Swans are dealt with a lot of respect in Hinduism, as they are considered to symbolise detachment, discrimination and therefore greater spirituality.
Being a Goddess of the arts and music, she is always depicted with the Sitar, an Indian stringed musical instrument.
